PERTH, Septi?: Because they refused ”td pay i the fines imposed as the result Of the strike of the mechanical staff of the newspaper “West Australian,” two members of the Union were arrested and detained to serve three days’ imprisonment. The mechanical staff held a stop-work meeting and adjourned for twenty-four hours. As a result, there will be no issue of the West Australian to-day. ’ DEBT BURDEN. ADELAIDE, Sept. 12. Discussing the question ’ of improving Australia’s credit, the Federal At-torney-General (Mr Latham) said if it were possible to improve credit; and save one per cent, interest, taxation could be reduced by ten'million sterling yearly. The total amount raised by taxation in Australia was about seventy-seven millions yearly, apart from payment for services rendered by railways, Post Office and other departments, and the Commonwealth and States paid fifty-seven millions in interest alone. Mr Latham said that the burden must be reduced. Probably, the first business next session would be concerning finance.
