CRICKET

WEST COAST ASSOCIATION The following are extracts from the report to be submitted at the annual meeting of the Association: — Your Committee is able to report that the season 1925/26 was probably the most successful in the history of West Coast cricket. No less than six new clubs were formed and the number of teams increased from 13 to 23. The weather was kind during most of the'year with the result, that practically all of the 250 players maintained their interest to the end. It is pleasing to record that home and home matches against Buller were resumed after a lapse of some years. Four single day games were played—one at Westport, one at Denniston and two at Greymouth. Three fo these were won by yotir eleven while the othei resulted in an even draw. It is expected that we shall have additional representative matches during the coming season, and it is almost , certain that Canterbury and Nelson will visit us.

The Senior Cup was won by the United “A” who won all their eight matches. The Star club were runners up with 11 points out of sixteen, with Cobden next. There being twelve entries for the Junior Championship, the competition was held in two sections. The final was played between United and Waiuta, and after an exciting game the latter gained a. well-merited win. For the first time, a third grade competition was conducted and judging from the enthusiasm displayed by the boys, it has come to stay. All the games were well contested, and some promising form was shown. The Cup for the champion team was won by Cobden. The Stenhouse Cup for competition amongst School teams was won by Marist School. It is apparent that the boys are displaying mora interest in the summer pastime, and it is hoped that the incoming executive will make an effort to give the lads some coaching during the coming season. Owing to the caute shortage of recreation grounds in Greymouth, it was often necessary to play fixtures on Sunday mornings as well as in the afternoons. In this connection it is pleasing to see that the Council have in mind the question of providing furthur reserves for recreation purposes. It was considered that the rules of the Association were somewhat out of date, and a sub-committee consisting of Messrs McCarthy, Greenwood,. Dunford and Casey was appointed .to draft a new set. The Committee has completed its task, ahd tne new rules will be submitted to the annual meeting for approval. Association finances are in a sound position. The credit balance increases from £ll/1/4 to £3l/3/8, and it is worthy of mention that the total expense to the Association of sending the “Rep.” Team to Westport and Denniston was only £l/7/6. Your Committee wishes to thank those men who unselfishly gave their services as Umpires, Messrs T. E. Y. Seddon, and J. D. Wingham for trophies, the “Star” and the “Argus” for the amount of space given to West Coast cricket, and to the Grey Borough Council, Greymouth Trotting Club, Greymouth Jockey Club, and United Cricket Club.
