BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) A recent arrival here was sent to the hospital last week as a suspected case of diphtheria. Mr R. Mettrick returned by to-day’s express from Christchurch, where he has been staying during the illness of Mr D. Mettrick, who is progressing favourably after a successful operation. The mine is continuing to work full time. The miners seem to be welcoming this favourable state of affairs, as a fair amount of broken time has been experienced during the last few months. The Greymouth shopkeepers will be bustled next pay day. The cricket club held a meeting last Sunday afternoon. The report and balance sheet was read. A committee consisting of Messrs R. Perrie, M. Anderson, P. Clunan, P. Rogers, A. Mason, A. McLagan and W. Balderstone was formed. M Anderson was appointed secretary and R. Perrie treasurer. It was resolved to entei- a senior and a junior team in the forthcoming competitions. A net is to be procured, and arrangements are being made concerning the preparation of the pitch. Five shillings is to be the membership fee. Last Friday the Caledonian Society held a successful Ingleside. About thirty visitors from Greymouth with their chief, Mr McLean, were' entertained. During the evening, songs and dancing were, indulged in. Many followers of the League code will be pleased to notice that J. Dodds and W. Hansen have been mentioned among the players who are to be selected for the South Island team. The defeat of the senior team last week-end in the final of the KnockOut Cup came as a surprise to many followers of the game.

The long spell of fine weather which Blackball has enjoyed for some weeks past broke on Monday, and the weather has been showery. As there is no water supply here, this break was very acceptable, as many tanks were getting low. The followers of the Soccer code are displaying keen interest in the final match for the Hazeldine Cup to be played at Dobson to-morrow (Saturday).
