HOKITIKA, September 1. A meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was lie.Kl last .evening. Present : The Mayor (Air G. Perrv), Grs A. R. Elcock, E. W. Heenan,‘T. W. Duff, Jas. King, D. J. Evans, and W. Jeffries. Apologies were received for the absence of Cis. ’ Armstrong and Teichelmann.

A. Cederman wrote, giving quotations for manufacturing xvMer mains. —Filed for reference. John Friend, Annotator of the Consolidated Statutes, wro.te enquiring if the Council required , Municipal Statutes.—Referred to the Town Clerk.

The New Zealand Refrigerating ,Co, .Christchurch, wrote stating tha.t one cattle and 44 sheep were delivered at Hokitika during July, and fopwarding cheque of £2 9s fop fees. W. H. Stopforth applied for drain connection, which find .been granted and the work carried out, .the Council paying half-cos,t. An application fpy extra water supply for wwdow-cooli,ng purposes was granted I. Reed, Revell Street. The Secretary of ,the Royal Visit Receptiop .Copimfttee intimated that the Council’s confriLption js £22 Os 4d, and later makjpg a refund of £8 15s lOd.

At the request of the Kumara Borough Council information re installation of petrol pumps was forwarded. The Princess Theatre ,Co. wrote intimating that in reply to the .Council’s notice respecting alterations to fire escapes, that arrangements had been made to erect a new fire escape, which will lead direct to the street.— onsidered satisfactory.

1). P. Stuart and thirteen others applied to have a footpath constructed along Stafford Street from Rolleston Street to Jollie Street. —Kef erred to Public Works .Committee to act.

The Treasurer reported ; receipts £344 4s 6d ; payments £614 14s lid, debit £284 2s; credit Loan Account £7O Is. The Treasurer reported that the overdraft is about £2OO less at this time than it was last yeai*; also that the Treasury had intimated that the Borough’s liability over the beach protection work had been paid off. A report from the Public Works Committee making a number of recommendations -was considered clause by clause.—lt was resolved that a line of pipes with lire plugs be constructed in Upper Gibson Quay in compliance with-, the Fire Brigade’s request, cost about £6O. ' That the matter of installing fire plugs in Jollie, Davie and Rolleston streets, between JHampden and Park streets, be held over for a fuller report from the overseer and to allow the Council as'a whole to visit the localities’. That kerbing and water table in Stafford Street between Tancred and Sewell streets be attended to at once.

A discussion took place on the recommendation of the Committee that applicants for drain connections pay dj costs, plus 5 pei 1 cent. ,( ’r Evans could see no reason for departing from the old custom of the Council paying'half. He moved that in equity the 5 per cent extra be deleted and that the matter stand over for th/ee months to allow of any ratepayers desiring to make drain connections to apply and enjoy the same privileges as those in the past. —Carried.

,On the resolution of the Mayor the notice to strike the annual rate was passed. The rate has increased this year by Id in the £—/4 against 1/3 last'year.
