MEETINGS

GOLDEN WEST LODGE. The attendance was* large at the fortnightly meeting of the “Golden West’’ Rebekah Lodge, held in the Druids’ Hall. Several candidates were elected for membership and several others were proposed. After the business was transacted a short enjoyable musical programme was rendered, amongst which were the following items: Song, Sister C. Hopgood; piano solo, Sister Wise; recitation. Sister A. Black; recitation, Sister Anderson.

LOYAL GREYMOUTH LODGE There was a very full attendance at the ordinary meeting of the above Lodge held last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, N.G. Bro. A. Warnes presiding. The Medical Officer’s report showed that three local members were incapacitated and sick pay was voted. The Social Committee reported that all arrangements had been finalised for the Grand Ball to be held on Tuesday next to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of the Lodge. Members had assisted enthusiastically and with the co-opera-tion of the ladies’ committee it was confidently expected the Lodge’s previous efforts -would be eclipsed. It was decided to celebrate the Jubilee of the Lodge by the holding of a banquet at some subsequent date and a sub-committe was appointed to go into the matter and bring up a report in relation thereto at a later meeting. An invitation is being extended to the Blackball Lodge to attend on a convenient occasion when they will be asked to conduct the working of the Lodge. Three candidates were initiated with usual ceremony niaking twenty-one full benefit members initiated during the year. The initiation was carried out by G.M. Bro. P. J. McCarthy, assisted by P.P.G.M. Bro. T. Collins and P.G. Bro. Seddon, acting as conductors. At the close of the ceremony, an address on the aims of the Order wa.ably given - by G.AI. Bro. P. J. McCarthy. The Lodge was closed with usual formality.

HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, August 13. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs T. W. Duff, - A. C. Armstrong, A. R. Elcock, E. Teichelmann, E. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, D. J. Evans and Jas. King. Before entering upon business the Mayor referred to the death of Mrs Coulson, mentioning her useful work in the community. As Mr Coulson was for many years a councillor and deputy-Mayor, he moved that a letter expressing the council’s sympathy be sent to the bereaved.—Carried, the councillors standing in silence. The Hokitika Fire Board wrote notifying the Council of its quota to the Board.

G. Bell, of Park Street, wrote asking that the drain there be cleaned out. —Referred to the P.W. Committee to act. Mandi and Co. wrote asking permission to construct a drain across Fitzherbert Street. —Referred to the P.W. Committee. J. Reid wrote asking for extra supply of water for window display.— Granted at 10/ per annum, with Inspector’s approval. Jos. Conning and others wrote draw ing the Council’s attention to lack of fireplugs at east Gibson Quay.—lt was resolved to have the matter reported on, with a view to meeting the request. W. Smith, Hampden Street, wrote, requesting attention to the drain near his residence.

Mr L. H. Palmer, Bealey Street, wrote asking permission to connect drainage pipe with Bealey Street drain. — Referred to the P. \V. Committee, with power to act, and to bring forward a scheme in connection with the drainage connectors. A further three months’ leave of absence was granted to Mr Andrewes (Town Clerk) at the reduced salary £l5 per month. The Treasurer reported receipts £252 6/, payments £BO2 14/2, debit £7O 1/, credit Loan Account £219 3/. Accounts amounting to £BO2 12/4 were passed for payment. The Overseer’s report on work carried out during the month was adopted. The Manager of the Abattoirs (Mr Jarman) reported: Slaughtered 27 cows, 20 heifers, 50 bullocks, 204 sheep, 26 lambs, 21 pigs, 23 calves. Condemned—l cow, 1 pig. Fees £63 2/; same month last year £73 11/. On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to fix the total annual rate this year at 1/4 in the £ unimproved value, being Id in the £ in advance of last year, the extra revenue to be devoted to the water service. It was decided to hold the next meeting on August 31.
