Ben Yen, Chinese proprietor of the Shanghai Cafe at Mildura, was struck down from behind with an iron bar late on Monday night. His assailant, who was masked, escaped. Yen sustained serious injuries, and is not expected to recover. Pools of blood were found in the cafe and yard. No arrest has yet been made. VICTORIA’S BIG- DEFICIT. MELBOURNE, July 21. Replying to a deputation, the Minister of Public Works (Air Webber) said the condition of Victoria’s finances were worse than for twenty-five years. Although it was announced the year’s deficit was £600,000, it .would be found, when the Budget was submitted to the Assembly, that the deficit would be over a million. Losses on soldier settlement were not taken into account in the first estimate.
