HOKITIKA NOTES

BOROUGH COUNCIL (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, June 25. The Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry) and Crs. D. J. Evans, Jas. King, Dr. Teichelmann, G. Heinz, A. R. Elcock, A. C. Armstrong, F.. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan. The Mayor referred to the death of the late Thomas Robinson who formerly was a member of the Council and served the town well. On the Mayor’s motion a resolution of sympathy was passed, the Councillors standing. A letter Was received from the Canterbury Automobile Assn, complaining of the bad state of the Hokitika Railway bridge and asking that the attention of the railway authorities be given ,to it. It was stated the bridge is undergoing repairs. The Canterbury Refrigerating Coy. wrote stating that 23 sheep and six lambs had been sent to Hokitika during the month to the order of butchers. Messrs Parkinson and Son wrote stating the shifting of the clock towel* would be difficult work, as it was constructed for permanency. From Town Clerk, Westport, asking wha’t the Council charged the school authorities for water for ordinary and extraordinary purposes. From Jas. Park replying to the Council’s note re reduction of retaining fee and suggesting that the •Borough legal work be distributed equally among the local lawyers.— Received.

Cr. Evans gave notice to move to rescind the resolution reducing the .retaining fee of the Borough solicitor. A. E. Hackell wrote surrendering a Borough reserve he had occupied.— Accepted. Mrs. D. Stevenson wrote asking for a few loads .of gravel in front of residence in Hall Street.—Request granted. G. Anderson wrote complaining of the state of the footpath in' front of his residence. Referred to the P.W. Committee to attend to. John Peake asked for the filling in of a ditch opposite his residence in Hall Street. —Agreed to. The Manager of the Central Dairy Coy., wrote asking .for a tew loads of gravel in front of the factory. The Councillors referred to the good work done by Mr. Parry in front of the factory. The Treasurer reported: Receipts £598/16/5, payments £32/8/7. Cr. £682/10/11. Loan Cr. £ll7/7/4. Accounts amounting to £217/4/11 were passed for payment. A bonus of £l5/12/0 was voted Mr. Gaylor for extra work done during Town Clerk’s illness.

The Overseer reported on the state of the water services./The report generally showed the pipe line to be in a very unsatisfactory state. After some discussion it was resolved on the motion of Cr. Elcock to set up a ppecial committee consisting' of the Mayor and Crs. Heinz and Elcock to go thoroughly into the ways and means of the water supply. The Reserves Committee reported on improvements at the cemetery, and the road up the hill. Arrangements had been made with the Mental Hospital authorities to maintain drains etc., about the cemetery. The drains through the Botanic Reserve also needed attention.
