INCIDENCE OF GOITRE

DOCTOR WARNS WOMEN. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, June 25. In a lecture under the auspices of the Medical Society, Dr Poate said statistics show that the incidence of goitre has definitely increased during the past twenty years. He pointed out also that goitre was much more common in women, and said the present-day woman endeavours to attract the opposite sex by Jiving up to the standard of the male. This, he considered was offering a physical insult to the thyroid gland, and if modern girls “continue their perpetual jazzing, cigarettes, cocktails and quest for excitement,' they cannot but expect a debilitating effect upon the nervous system and the greater prevalence of exophthalmic goitre.” Dr Poate quoted statistics collected at one of Sydney’s leading hospitals, showing the disappointing results obtained by X-ray treatment of ophthal mic goitre, the slow progress in many cases under purely medical treatment and the excellent results obtained by surgery in suitable cases.
