.An outbreak of distemper has resulted in the deaths in Auckland of scores of dogs. The symptoms are very similar to ‘flu in human beings, and the disease is highly infectious. — Press Assn.

Good progress is being made with the erection of the lighting tower at the end of the wharf. The lights should be installed this week, and when in operation, in conjunction with the light at the Boundary Street end of the wharf, will afford light of such power as to make conditions for working the wharves much more satisfactory than they have ever been before. It is expected that the rays from the two lamps will make the area as well lighted as at the day time.

A motor car with a driver and four passengers went over the side of the road a mile beyond Inangahua Junction on Saturday evening. The driver dimmed his light to pass another car, and for the moment did not notice that the road curved inward. The ground gave way under- the back wheel and the car slipped over and turned on to its side, when it was held up by trees along the bank. The driver and passengers scrambled out through the window and with assistance landed in safety on the road. The wind screen broke, but it did not appear as if ary serious ( damage was done to the car. The passengers fortunately escaped uninjured,
