NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to “Star.") ASHBURTON, June 11. The Ashburton County Handicap was a fine race, the field being all close up at the finish. Peter Swift won nicely from Dalmeny, Man o’ War, Conara, Author Jinks and Pluto. At the turn for home the field bunched, with the colours of Peter Swift prominent. Over the last furlong the Wellington-owned trotter gave out a strong challenge, and by defeating such a useful field of pacers, demonstrated that he is back to his best form. Dalmeny, who was a quiet eleventh hour tip, ran a good race and beat all but the winner. The honours of the race were with Man o’ War, who from 132 yards behind, finished fast in third place. At the end of a mile the Methven-trained pacer was close on 150 yards behind the leaders. He must have covered the last eight furlongs in fast time, as

he registered 4.27 1-5 for the full journey. Conara paced a sound race. The Logan Pointer gelding was not too well placed in the early stages, but he was staying on well at the finish. Author Jinks led intto the straight, at which stage he looked the winner, but he was left without a final effort and was easily beaten out of a place. Pluto, Pan Yan, Homer and General Bingen were prominent for three-parts of the journey, but Bessie Logan, who was favourite, never got within striking distance of the leaders and finished down the straight.
