FIRE OUTBREAKS
. — cottage destroyed. . (Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, June 12. Shortly before eight o’clock last evening, a five roomed cottage in the Taruheru district was gutted by fire. Being outside the boundary, the brigade did not attend. The house was occupied by John Davis, and owned byTucker’s Estate. The insurances on the house and furniture total £175 in the Yorkshire Office. HEAVY CASH LOSS. LEVIN, June 3. Fire early this morning destroyed a seven-roomed dwelling at Shannon, owned by Cottle, and occupied by Chas. Boyle. The house and contents were a total loss, the occupants narrowly 7 escaping. Boyle lost a wallet containing £92 10/- in cash. Insurances were £7OO. CHCH. FAMILY’S ESCAPE. CHRISTCHURCH, June 13. Fighting their way through a fog of blinding smoke, while burning timbers crackled. and fell about them, Malcolm Anderson, his wife and three children, escaped death’in their beds, when fire destroyed their home early this morning for the second time in sixteen months. The house, which was situated in Lincoln Road, was behind one of two shops. Now all are in ashes. The insurances were £lOOO. Neighbours had to come to rhe family’s assistance as they escaped to the street clad only in night attire. BRISBANE DRUGGISTS. BRISBANE, June 13. Fire in the premises of Bickford and Sons, wholesale druggists and general merchants, in Tank Street,' City, caused damage estimated at many thousands.
CANBERRA FATALITIES. CANBERRA, JUNE 11. Fire which occurred in a canvas tent at Northbourne camp near Ainslie resulted in two men, Samuel Palmer and Alexander Beveridge, being burned to death. The men had been cooking a meal over a large fire in the tent, and were unable to escape when the structure caught alight.
