CYCLIST’S HARD RIDE
AUCKLAND TO XVELLINGTON. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June. 13. A. C. Sutherland, professional cyclist, who left Auckland at 9.15 a.m. on Thursday, arrived here at the same time yesterday morning. He had bad weather in the latter part, and was very fatigued on arrival. Heavy rain l ’ came on after reaching Otaki, and the rider lost his way several times. At Tawa Flat, no great distance from Wellington, he was frozen, and crawled under a bush for shelter. He saw a light, and found a hut with two men, but they had no food. Pacers picked him rip at times, but mostly he was by himself, and felt the loneliness more than anything. He estimated his actual riding time was 53 hours. He reached Hawera at 10.30 p.in. on Friday, and Palmerston North at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday. He then rode through the night and against a cold head wind and rain till he arrived. Sutherland says that he would not do the journey again for a thousand pounds.
