WORCESTER DEFEATED

BY 194 RUNS X N.Z. ALWAYS ON TOP (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) 'By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, June 10. The New Zealanders’ defeat of Worcestershire is considered an excellent performance. They played like a team which considered itself the better side and never allowed momentary discomfits to upset that belief. Fox played cautiously and again came out with top score for the County, making 79, precisely the same number as in the first innings. Tarbox batted spiritedly, and this pair put on a bold front for a time and redeemed the innings from insignificance. But for them the game would have been over before lunch. Lowry’s policy plainly was to entice the batsmen to get themselves out. He appeared to have told Merritt to persevere in patching the ball up, and kept him on for an hour and three quarters. Though he failed to get a wicket, the youngster puzzled King immensely, but both Fox and Tarbox were comparatively comfortable. King was run out very unluckily. He drove Merritt hard, and the ball hit the stumps. The batsmen did not see where it went to, and started off without looking. Once, however, Fox and Tarbox were separated, McGirr and Merritt who was brought on again just before lunch, rapidly finished off the innings. James, who kept wickets excellently throughout, caught Fox magnificently on leg side, and in the end the County was beaten by 194 runs. The wicket played beautifully. The local bowlig club used the outfield each evening f'or their pastime after stumps were drawn. SELECTOR’S PROTEST. BEST BOWLERS WANTED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 10. Keen disappointment at the absence of the leading English bowlers from the County sides which have met the New Zealand cricketers on the present tour, is expressed by Mr Brice, one of the selectors of the team. “One of the main objects of the tour was that our batsmen should gain experience agaixist the best,” he remarked to-day. “What is the use of sending our players over there, it they are not going to play against the best bowlers, and I am very disappointed that our team has not met such bowlers as Tait and Root and I should say the team itself is disappointed. lam sure our players would have liked to have had a go at those bowlers.” Mr Brice added that he had written to the. New Zealand Cricket Council s Chairman urging that some action be taken, with a view to making sure that New Zealand cricketers will have opportunities of gaining experience against leading bowlers during the remainder of the tour. It seemed to him that there would be a certain loss of interest in the tour, if the Counties continued to drop theix* leading players from teams opposing New Zealanders. It will also probably have the effect of discounting the real merit of the performances by New Zealand batsmen. “We want the Counties to play their best bowlers,” he said, “it is of no use playing weaker men, as thei« are plenty of that class m New Zealand.”
