(Per Press Association.) EX-POLICEMAN SENTENCED. HAMILTON, June 10. A sentence of one year’s imprisonment with hard labour to be followed by two years’ reformative detention was given Henry Morris, a' married man, an ex-policeman, and head gaxdener at Tokanui Mental Hospital, by Mi* Justice Herdman, to-day for attempted rape of a 17-year-old girl. FRUITGROWERS’ CONFERENCE WELLINGTON, June 10. The Fruitgrowers’ Conference concluded to-day. It was decided that the Orchard Tax should be renewed, the minimum tax being fixed at 5/-. The Conference decided to request the Minister to bring down a bill embodying the remissions to the Control Act agreed upon at last conference. A suggestion that the provinces submit proposals for the best way to advertise New Zealand fruit was favoured. The conference concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr. H. E. Napier (manager of the Federation) and his officers, to the Directors of the Horticultural Division (Mr. J. A. Campbell) and his officers, and to Colonel Gray for the able manner he had represented the Federation in London and a special tribute was paid to Mr. T. C. Brash (President of the Conference).

KING COUNTRY LICENSES. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 10. ' That liquor finding its way into the King Country dry area was a menace to the Maori people, and that, taken on the sly. it was causing young men who under proper control of the traffic would not touch liquor, to become drunkards, was the opinion expressed by members of the Waitomoi Licensing Committee to-day, when a resolution was passed urging the Government to take a referendum on the licensing question in the district, and, if the vote were favourable, urging the Government to grant licenses immediately. It was stated that the late Mr Massey had promised to give Parliament an opportunity to discuss the question. The whole position had become a farce as the law being observed, said one member.
