LOCAL UNEMPLOYED

THE MAYOR’S STATEMENT Discussing the matter of unemployed in Greymouth with a reporter this morning, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Greenslade, stated that the present position in the town was causing him some anxiety. The number out of employment was not great in point of numbers, he placed it at between fifty and sixty men, but even that numbet of wage earners being out of work affected the community as it meant that a number of families were “up against it.” He found that most of the men out of work had a distaste for registering at the Labour Bureau, and that being so, it made it difficult for the local bodies to do anything to secure relief for them. As matters stana any representation to the Government for relief, would be referred to the Labour Bureau in Greymouth. When it was ascertained that only a dozen or less had registered, it would not be possible to assist the rest. His recommendation to every man out of work, and able to work, is to register at the Labour Bureau. When this has been done, the local bodies will confer, and make joint representation of the position to the Government, which will probably result in some relief being afforded. So far as the local bodies are concerned, it might be possible for them to find employment for a certain inumber on the proposed reserves \ works. His opinion was that failure to register was more on account of a failure to appreciate the usefulness of the Labour Bureau, rather than from any feeling of delicacy, though the latter was a possible reason. DEPUTATION TO PREMIER WELLINGTON, June 10. Members of the Executive of the Municipal Association from all over New Zealand, waited on the Premier this morning to discuss the prevalent unemployment. The discussion was private, at the request of the deputation itself, but it is gathered that very satisfactory understandings were reached on several points.
