HOKITIKA, May 14. Tile fii'st meeting of 'the Kolcitika Borough Council after the election, was held last evening, Present: —The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and Crs A. R. Elcock, Jas. King, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, E. W. Heenan, G, Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, and E. Teichelmann.
The Returning Officer’s (Mr F. G. Coles) declaration was read and received.
A letter was received from Mr M. Keating reporting on the conference of local bodies, held in. Greymouth, concerning the allocation of motor revenue in Grey and Westland. —Resolved that the Westland, allocation be referred to the P. W. Committee to confer with the West land County Council.
The Conservator of Forests wrote, stating that the bush around Lake Kanieri was on a scenic reserve and was under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and agreeing with the Council in preserving the water from pollution. T. H. Toohey applied to have a kerbside pump erected in Revell Street. T. Baty made a similar application for Weld Street. —Granted, subject to the sites being approved by the Borough Overseer, and that an indemnity policy be taken out to indemnify the Council in case of accidents.
The Secretary of the Rugby Union wrote asking for the use of Cass Square on June 3 for the annual seven-a-side tournament. Granted on the usual conditions. A request for a strip of asphalt along .the spectators’ fence was left to the Reserves Committee to report on. The Basket Ball Club asked for the use of portion of Cass Square on June 3. —Left with the Reserves Committee.
An application from the Secretary of the School Committee asking permission to take 40 loads of sand from Whitcombe Square for the school gardens, was left with the Overseer to attend to.
The Treasurer’s report showed receipts £l5B 15s, payments £307, credit £5lO 17s.
The Abattoirs Manager (Mr J. Jarman) reported on carcases examined as follow’: —25 cows, 24 heifers, 57 bullocks, 246 sheep, 77 lambs, 19 pigs, 12 calves; condemned 4 cows and 1 pig. Fees £73, corresponding month last year £73 15s. The Overseer’s report dealing with work carried out in the Borough was received and adopted. ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. Finance Committee: The whole Council, with Cr Teichelmann as chairman. Public Works: Crs Armstrong, Heinz, Elcock and King, to elect their own chairman. Abattoirs Committee: Crs Jeffries, Armstrong and King, to elect their own chairman.
Reserves: Crs Evans, Teichelmann, Duff, and Heenan.
Library: Crs Evans, Teichelmann, Heinz and Duff.
Crs Elcock, Jeffries, Armstrong and Teichelmann were appointed to sign cheques. Cr Jeffries was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor. On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to give the Town Clerk three months’ leave of absence on full pay.
The application of T. Coyle for his annual holiday was granted. On the motion of Cr Jeffries, it was resolved to place on record the Council’s appreciation of the work done for the Borough by the retired Councillors.
Cr Jeffries referred to the two important issues before the new Council, viz., the water supply, which will have to be gone into very seriously shortly ; either the present supply must be improved or a new supply brought in. There was also the question of the numerous reserves around the town. Jf these were sold they would bring in a sum which would go a long way towards the cost of a water supply. On the motion of Cr King, R was resolved that the Overseer be asked to make a comprehensive report on the water supply. The Overseer was also asked to make a report on the drains tapping the swamp north of Park Street.
