SHIP’S STEWARD ARRESTED

AUCKLAND, May 13

A large number of people witnessed a violent fight, and struggle between two men in Symonds Street, at. 11 o’clock this morning. Many thought (hat it was merely two .men engaged in a fistic discussion, but. really it was between Detective McHugh and a ship’s steward, who had escaped from the - Wharf Police Station half an hour previously. ■

Detective McHugh arrested a steward named Edward McKay, upon a charge of stealing two coats, and took him to the Queen’s Wharf Police Station to go further into the matter. McKay made a dash for freedom from the station and Detective McHugh set. off in pursuit He soon became lost among the many people at (he fool of Queen Street. The driver, however, saw what was taking place, and promptly stopped his vehicle. Detective McHugh went to recapture McKay, who closed with him and a great struggle ensued. This lasted for some time ‘and McKay became violent, eventually having to be thrown and handcuffed. He was then taken )to the city lock-up, on 'the very van on which he had endeavoured to escape.
