GALLON JAR IN CAR (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 12. A fine of twenty-five pounds for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car was imposed on Alfred Roy Wilson Ellis, aged 25, at the Police Court to-day. Evidence was given that accused collided with a safety zone, and ran away, pursued by a Traffic Officer. An empty gallon jar that had contained beer was in the car, but the accused denied he had any of it, saying that two other men had finished the jar betwene them, while he had a bottle of lemon squash. Magistrate Hunt said that the story was too thin altogether. The accused admitted that he had later had three light “shandies.” Constable Gawler said he telephoned seven doctors asking them to go to the Police Station to examine accused, but they refused when they heard accused had no money. Finally, Dr.. Maskell examined accused and considered accused was not under the influence of liquor.

The Magistrate said that, having due regard to the doctor’s examination, he had no doubt accused had had a few more beers than he should have had. He had a bad record for bylaw offences, and, in addition to a fine, his license Would be cancelled for two years.
