“THREE STIFFS”

TATTS’ TICKET SALE.

(Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, April 13.

“How “The Three Stiffs,” three residents of New Brighton! won the £5006 prize in Tattersall’s sweep, but did not learn their luck until, "The Two Stiffs,” two less fortunate speculators, wrote congratulating theiri, was revealed iri letters received in Christchurch to-day.

Ivor Heslehurst, Dulwich Hill, Sydney, writing to his brother, W. J. Heslehurst, Christchurch states: “I have been sending for tickets in Tattersal’s consultation. A chap at iny works has been sharing the ticket with me. Well, we happened to have a ticket in the Geelong Cup run in Victoria. We called ourselves “The Two Stiffs” syndicate. On the' Saturday after the race was run, we noticed in the newspapers that “The Three Stiffs,” New Brighton, New Zealand, had won tl;e £5OOO first prize. You can imagine the surprise we got. I wrote a letter to the winners congratulating them and telling theiri that they beat “The Two Stiffs” in Sydney. I received an answer to my letter yesterday, and ain enclosirig it.” The enclosed letter was as follows: “We, ‘The Three Stiffs,’ cannot express, our feelings towards you oft sending us the letter you did, as we would not have known we had won, as iny mate is away in the country working. He got your letter and read it before seeing the result. We never knew we had drawn a horse either. Then, we did not know wliat horse had won. It took us two hours finding out in the newspaper office. We are very thankful to you. I may tell you that your letter was handed to a solicitor to verify we had won as he transacted our business. Would it be asking too much from you to send us a. paper if you have one, as we never found out very much about it. We will all be pleased to get it, as the man whose address it went to, is in poor circumstances. He had ten months with chronic rheumatics and only started work a little while ago. We other two are only struggling along. We are still sending as we have had two wins now, and still think we have a third chance. We have been sending now for nearly four years, never missing a week. It has cost us £l9 1/5 each to get this win. We have had congratulations from all over the country. Well I will close now, again thanking you for your letter. We hope that “The Two Stiffs” will get the next win.”
