AUCKLAND EASTER MEETING FIELDS REVIEWED. (Special to •’Star.") AUCKLAND, April 13. The Auckland Easter Meeting, which opens on Saturday, promises to be in keeping with all gatherings staged at Ellerslie. From all parts of the North Island the best performed two-year-olds and older horses have been brought North to compete, and the racing should provide excellent contests. Most interest will centre in the Easter Handicap, in which it is expected a field of twenty will line up. Reremoana, the best miler in the Dominion, and the winner of the event on two previous Occasions, will be a strongfancy despite his burden of lOst. 21b. Joy King, who ran -second in the Thompson Handicap at Trenthain, is nicely placed at 7.12, and Royal Divorce and Le Choucas will have followings. However, the prospects of Joy King and Reremoana cannot be passed over. the Great Northern Oaks may see a surprise, as one can never tell just what will happen when three-year-old fillies are raced over a mile and a haif. Form points directly to Lady Desmond and Phaola, and it is difficult to go beyond them. Some smart two-year-olds are engaged in the Champagne Stakes, but on the season’s form one could not go pash; Cimabue and Gascony. Silvermihe and Damaris are expected to run well, but the first pair mentioned are to be preferred. The Brighton Hurdles is regarded as a very open race, and quite a number of those engaged look to have real good chances. Archibald has been galloping and jumping well, and it will take a good one to beat him. Royal Abbey has not raced for a longtime, but he is good when right and R. Hannah can never be left out when he Starts a horse over fences. He also has a useful one in Wedding Match engaged, but she may be better suited in the Steeplechase. Archibald should be. the favourite. D’ay Bell, who was expected to run prominently, was badly kicked on Tuesday, and is not likely to start. Several of an unknown quality are in the Onslow Stakes. Melissa and Thaw have both shown their ability to gallop, while a lightweight who may be prominent is Prince Otto.

The Steeplechase is not easy to solve. Royal Form won twice at Thames, and is a useful sort, and so also’ is Wedding March, while Prince Rufus and Garzon can go two and ahalf miles over the big country well. Pentagram and Bahabur are useful, and the winner is not easy to find. Perhaps Wedding March, Pentagram and Bahabur will be most fancied. Despite his big weight, Star Stranger will be well supported if he is produced in the’ President’s Handicap, but the task set him is a formidable one, as some smart horses over a mile and a quarter are included in the field. Eden Hall, Hyhanna, Pegaway and Barometer are likely ones, but when, the position is summed up, Alloway’s chance looks as good as any, and he and Eden HallEmay be most in demand. NEWS AND NOTES. The Easter Racing Carnival commences on Saturday with racing at Tuapeka, Wairarapa, Feilding, Riverton and Auckland and Trotting at Christchurch and Hawera. Nominations for all events at the Reefton Jockey Club’s Autumn Aleeting will close with the Secretary, A. M. Carroll, on Saturday, April IG, at 8 p.m. A fair number of Canterbury horses are engaged at Hawera and their chances must be considered favourable to undertake such a long journey. Ben Bingen and Logan Park should command a lot of respect in their races.

The fields at Canterbury have filled well and winners are well concealed. Guy Parrish, who raced so well when half ready at the Royal meeting should give punters a good start for the meeting. Bingen Lad had been expected on a few occasions lately and if Saturday is his day he should be hard to beat in the Fendalton Handicap, but RoSie Nut and Final McKinney will take some beating. Holly Boy will probably start favourite in the Easter Handicap on Sat-

urday and this representative of Tomkinsori’s stable should earn some money. Trenand usually gets the small end of the purse, but Queen s Own should have a say in the settlement of the race.

J. Bryce has a very small team racing on Saturday, but he will be fully engaged on Wednesday next. Archibald, Lady Desmond, Commendation and Gascony should pay short prices at the Auckland meeting. Agrion may pay entrance money' at Riccarton. Judging from the nominations of the Westland Racing Club the Easter meetings on the Coast will be confined almost to West Coast horses.

Caliburn has three engagements at Kumara on Monday, but Peho will be very hard to dispose of in his two engagements. Some Abbey was unlucky in two races at Westport, and, as she is very well at present, she should be worth following during the Easter meetings. Erin-go-Bragh has raced consistently, but without much luck, in the North Island. The company there is much superior to the West Coast. He should be a good horse to follow. Birthmark was a costly proposition at Westport and on that form he should be paying a handsome dividend if he wins at Kumara. S. Waddell booked accommodation at Riccarton for King’s Folly, Shirley and Rascal, but he has cancelled one box, as King’s Folly is not to make the trip.

F. Voight will pilot Nincompoop in the Great Easter Handicap and Footfall in the Great Autumn. The southern horseman is likely to play a leading part in both races.

Racing will surely travel -back to the bad old days of the win, tie, or wrangle business if a more vigilant and competent control is not observed over the running. There is, however, some hope for the better things as it is on record that a rider at the Invercargill meeting was fined 10/- for smoking a cigarette when in colours and weighing out for a race. Centrepiece gained many admirers by the style in which he disposed of Rapier at the end of their seven furlongs gallop on Tuesday. They kept close company for over file furlongs, but over the last bit Centrepiece was drawing right away from his mate. He is in great fettle at present and he will take a lot of beating in the Great Easter Handicap, despite his reputation for rarely giving his best on the first day of a meeting. Footfall was responsible for a very attractive gallop of a mile and a quarter on Tuesday. He was not out on a record breaking task but he finished on strongly, after maintaining a sound pace all the way. There will be no fitter horse in the Great Autumn field, and he will set his opponents a very severe task over the concluding stages of the journey.
