HOSPITAL LEVIES. WELLINGTON, April 13. The Hospital Board to-day fixed levies totalling £68,326, against £49,306 last year. Wellington City Council’s contribution is £53,150. against £38,683, in the previous year. . BY-LAW UNREASONABLE. CHRISTCHURCH. April 13. Holding that the by-law of the Riccarton Borough Council, which limits the speed to fifteen miles per hour on the Riccarton Road for two chains on either side of intersections is un reasonable, the Magistrate, Mr Lawry, to-day, dismissed informations against motorists charged with breaches of this by-law. SCIENCE STUDENTS. WELLINGTON, April 13. The first scholarships awarded' by the Scientific Industrial Research Department were announced to-day. The recipients are: N. S. Alexander, M.Sc. Auckland, for research into the absorption of X-rays; J. C. Anderson, M.Sc., Auckland, for the mutarotation of sugars P. W. Aitken, M.Sc., Otago, for the investigation of flax gum with a view to its better removal and utilisation; N. M. Rogers, Canterbury, rssccircli into ths helium content of New Zealand natural gases.
