From what is related, it would seem that houses ujre not being eagerly sought after generally in Ashburton (remarks the “Guardian”). One fiveroomed house has been empty for over two months, despite the fact that it is in splendid order and that the rental asked was only 25s a week. Numerous people looked at it in a half- hearted way, but no tenant was forthcoming. The owner then decided to sell, and asked £llOO. No business following, the price, was lowered to £9OO, but still there was nothing doing. Two further decreases were made, one of £lOO and the other of £2OO, with the same result. Finally the price w r as fixed at £530, and it is stated that the property changed hands at £5OO. The house was only recently renovated and painted. '■
