KUMARA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

KUMARA, February 25

It is rumoured that a well-known Kumara storekeeper has purchased the Paroa Hotel, and will enter into possession early in April. Mrs Little, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs P. McDonald, returned on Tuesday morning. Mr R. BelJ, who will represent the Kumara Fire Brigade at the Brigades’ Conference, to be held at Gisborne, has left for the North Island. He is accompanied by Mrs Bell. The Mayor (Mr Spiers) left for Murchison this morning, in company of his brother, Mr B. Spiers. He expects to return on Monday evening. Little ‘Snowy” Rudkin, the seven-year-old son of Mr Cara Rudkin, formerly of Kumara, is starting early to make a name for himself in the sporting world, having won the 100yds boys’ race against all-comers at the recent electric light sports meeting held at Wellington. As he came up the straight a crowd a 10,000 cheered him to victory. Describing the race, a contemporary says that Scholtz, the American sprinter, who visited the Dominion last year, saw "Snowy” in action, and predicted that he was a champion in. the making. He is a nephew of Mr Percy Peters, of Greymouth. *

The timber workers’ picnic, which was held at Cunningham’s paddock, Taipo, to-day, was well attended. The day being fine and having been declared a public holiday was sufficient inducement for both old and young to take advantage of the day’s outing. Nearly every lorry in the town had to be brought into requisition to carry the picnickers.
