ROSS NOTES

lOur Own Correspondent.)

ROSS, Feb. 24

There has lately been a phenomenal number of herring off the coast. Last night, a party consisting of Messrs H. McMillian, F. and C. Fellowes, F. Sharpe, J. Anderson and J. Pethig netted about 300 dozen at the mouth of the Mikonui. This is the largest haul for a single net for a number of years. The Rev. F. Rule, Superintendent of the Presbyterian Orphanages in Christchurch and Timaru, visited Ross last night, and gave an interesting address on the social .service work for which he is responsible. His appeal for sympathy, interspersed with humorous and pathetic anecdotes met with a ready response, a generous collection being taken in aid of the Orphanages. Mr Rule forecasted the building of a home for aged men in Christchurch, on similar lines to the one already in existence in Dunedin. The continued dry weather is ad vcrsely affecting the grazing areas, and a shower would be welcome. There is a great ' scarcity of orders for timber and the mills are working with small staffs.

The tennis court under preparation for the Amusement Club is now nearing completion, though it will be some months before it is ready for use. Mr R. S. Shillilo, of Christchurch, who acted as judge at the horticultural exhibits at the Greymouth Show, recently visited Ross, and expressed pleasure in the appearance of the grounds of the local State School. lieoffered a prize for the best kept plots, and this has stimulated the ohildrei to ereat activity in the schQpl garden.
