S. AUSTRALIA AND VICTORIA. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) ADELAIDE, December 3. The Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and South Australia was today commenced. Victoria lost 6 for 265. (Ponsford 178, Hendry 30, and Mitchell 32). The weather was fine but dull, and the wicket good. Ponsford played attractive, aggressive cricket, and runs came quickly before luncheon. After the interval the batsmen treated the bowling with great respect, and the rate of scoring was much slower. The fielding throughout was very fan'ty. LATER. ADELAIDE, December 4. Victoria in the fust innings scored 315 (Ponsford 214), Williams took 6 for 88, Brimmett 2 for 110. South Australia have 25 on for no'wickets.
Ponsford compiled his score in 267 minutes, and hit twenty-two fours and one six. He played brilliantly all round the wicket, specially on the on side. He gave no chance. Williams proved the most destructive bowler, turning the ball several inches both ways. BAT SOLD FOR £465 LONDON, Dec. 3. A bat bearing the signatures of the Australian cricketers, was auctioned and re-auctioned for £465, at a dinner for the benefit of the London Orphan School. GREY MAIN v. MARIST. ' i . The final of the school cricket competition for the Stenhouse Cup was played yesterday afternoon at the Recreation Ground between the Grey Main and Marist Scoots, Marist winning by ten wickets. State batting first made 76 runs (Harrington 35, R. Scott 15). Anderson was Marist’s best bowler, and secured six wickets for 20 runs. Bayley and Lord opening for Marist passed the opponents’ total without losing their wickets. The game was continued and at 117 Lord was run out, having macle 27, lie played a fine innings. Bayley continued, and after scoring a hundred, retired. He batted splendidly. Play was stopped shortly after. Garth being 30 not out, the score being 180 for two wickets.
