NORTHCLIFFE’S ESTATE
NEWSPAPER SALE QUESTIONED.
SECRETARY SUGGESTS FRAUD.
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (By Cable —Press Assn.—Copyright.)
LONDON, December 1. A remarkable lawsuit is engaging the Chancery Division. Louis "Owen, who was the late Lord Northcliffe’s confidential secretary, and a beneficiary under the will, is claiming that the sale of the newspaper properties by Sir George Sutton to Lord Rothermere on September 20, 1022, for £1,643,000, should be voided. Plaintiff claims that the property was really worth much more, as shown by the fact that Rothermene sold it a year later for £5,600,000. The Inland Revenue is also interested in the suit, believing that the value of the death duties was underestimated.
Seventeen King’s Counsellors are engaged in the case, which is additionally interesting, as plaintiff suggests a breach of trust on the part of Sutton and Rothermere, who are both fiduciary in relation to the estate.
