ATHLETIC SPORTS RESULTS (Special to “Star.”) WESTPORT, Dec. 2. The Athletic Association held another successful evening meeting, competition being keen and finishes good. Results: — 75 Yards—Easton (8) 1, Woods (3) 2, Holder (5) 3. 440 Yards—Easton (19) 1, Crooks (scr.) 2, Phipps (17) 3. 2 Mile Cycle—Lindop (scr.) 1, Blair (90) 2, Cummings (200) 3. 3 Miles—Betts (230) 1, Blair (130) 2, Hultquist (25) 3. Hultquist (cycle) defeated Jones over a hundred yards. Boys’ Cycle—Marr 1, Beck 2, McElwee 3. Inches only separated the placed lads. In the Hop, Step and Jump, Easton (scr.) won comfortably, with a jump of 41 feet 4 inches. The postponed Fire Brigade Sports meeting will take place to-night. MURIEL STARR The Muriel Starr Company opened last night to a big house staging “The House of Glass”. The celebrated actress received a tremendous ovation at the conclusion of the performance. Returning thanks she stated that she had been looking forward to re-visiting the West Coast for a long time, and thought it just wonderful to be back amongst such warm hearted people, and thanked the audience for the cordiality of the reception. The Company play a season of four nights, but are not visiting the country districts owing to pressure of time. ATHLETE’S TRANSFER Charlie Jones, one of Buller’s most prominent athletes is leaving for Greymouth next week to take up a position on the railway. When in form, he is a solid man over the hundred and furlong distances, and ajso a good all round jumper. Jones should prove an acquisition to athletic circles in Greymouth. LICENSEE FINED After a lengthy hearing of a charge of breach of the Licensing Act, yesterday, before Mr. W. Meldrum, Sam Paul, licensee of the Club Hotel pleaded guilty and was fined ten pdunds. Mr. Meldrum said that he must inflict the maximum penalty as it was the fourth offence within thirteen months. He did not, think the charge severe enough to warrant an endorsement of the license. A charge against Read, barman, of supplying liquor after hours was sustained. Defendant was convicted and fined. In evidfence he stated that the police was telling untruths, but the S.M. said the evidence of both constables was substantiated by the licensee, and he held the view that Read had supplied the men. Two citizens, for procuring liquor after the prescribed period, were convicted and a nominal fine imposed.
