BULLER NOTES
; NEW CEMENT WORKS > (Special t<>, “Star.”) t WESTPORT, Nov. 30. > Messrs Banks and Hopkins, North Island speculators interested in vari- > ous propositions’ in the Buller dis- > trict, have been paying a visit of in--1 spection. During the week end they ; made a report on the Cape Foulwind i Cement project, which was cabled • Home. Mr. Young, who promoted the - venture has proceeded to Wellington „ and hopes to receive a favourable re- : ply from London, in which case, an ■ early start will be made with the 1 work. If the project is successful, it ; is expected that the old Cape FoulI wind township will become as lively ; as in former days, when the harbour ; works wer** in fuH'swing. Mr. Watson, > Waimangaroa, recently forwarded a - sample of clay to the Government An- > alyst to ascertain whether it was suitj able for the manufacture of pottery. , The clay has proved highly successful : in making bricks and pipes, for which there is a big demand. The Analyst I was forwarded a miniature shoe made i from clay of exceptional quality, ad- • mirably suitable for manufacture of pottery. This will probably lead to r another industry being shortly estabj lished in the Buller district. 1 ; BISHOP OF NELSON i Bishop Sad Her is visiting Westport, > conducting a special service, at St. • John’s Church on Sunday evening. ' Twenty-eight candidates were present- ' <A for confirmation. County Engineer, has , completed his tour of the County to estimate the. damage caused by the recent flood. He found many places in a very bad state, particularly New Creek road, Lyell Riding, which serves a small number of ratepayers. The cost of repairs to this road and bridge will be £9OO. The estimated damage in the County, exclusive of that on highways previously assessed at £3OOO, amounts to £2OOO. It is expected that the Highways Board will meet their liability, while an appeal will be made to the Government for assistance with the latter amount. A compilation of the estimated losses by property holders in the fuller County has been completed by the Engineer, Mr. Schadick. The losses have been assessed on a fairly low scale, and still the total amount of damage reaches £8,200 approximately. The f heaviest loser is Mr. Roselli (£2,800) who has abandoned his property, while Mr. Walker's (Rocklands) loss is close on £ 2000. A report has been forwarded to the Minister of Public Works.
