MURIEL STARR A packed house assembled to witness the concluding production “Madame.X” by the Muriel Starr Company at the Opera House last evening. In this stirring melodrama Miss Muriel Starr gave an emotional characterisation of the absinthe-sodden wreck JaCqueliiie, who, turned out of her home of luxury by a severe husband, sunk to the lowest depths of misery and despair. The supporting caste was augmented by a jury of local identities. A section of the audience appeared to have mistaken tragedy for comedy, being able to find considerable humour where none was intended by the characters. On the other hand, the public is reputed to love a “cry.” They took full license during the sad parts of the play last night and wept audibly. At the conclusion Miss Starr was accorded an ovation, the audience rising and applauding till the curtain fell. ST. JOHN’S SHOW.
