TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS. (Special to “Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 29. The Takapuna Meeting will conclude on Wednesday, and at the time of wiring the weather promises to be' much belter than on Saturday. Good acceptances have been received for all events, but it will probably be found with a dryer track that the form of the opening day will probably be upset. The first problem for backers is the Vauxhall Handicap, in which few have any form to recommend them. After winning on Saturday, Arch Queen is sure to be in demand, but Quondong and Luxurious are a likely pair to get support. In the Kawau Handicap, Black Cruiser has plenty to carry and is hardly likely to beat Passionate at even weights. Only a couple of weeks ago Passionate won the big handicap on the second day at the Thames meeting. Pouri and Kamehameha should, along with Passinate, carry most money. Delightment, the top-weight in the Stanley Handicap, is a fairly good hack and will be hard to beat. Adjuster should go well. Ruffles has proved himself such a good sprinter in the hack company that he will be favourite in the Cautley Handicap, in which he will be meeting stronger opposition than he has yet encountered. Archeen should go well again, but one who will be hard is Tea Bell, who did not start on Saturday. The St. Andrews Handicap should be a good race. Ruapapa has won several races at Takapuna, but with Ost. he is set a big task. Jamieson’s pair, Nippy and Spoony, will be favourites, while the lightweights with chances are Aurumavis and Thursby. Such a weak field is engaged in the Rakino Handicap that if anything can beat High Finance and Lorna Doon, it will come as a surprise. Another weak field will line up for the Pupuke Handicap. Golden Krist, Delightment and Quondong should get most support. The Ngataringa Handicap looks open. Archibald and Aurumavis, if the latter is reserved, will run a fairly good seven furlongs, and Ring the Bell will do better than on the first day if the track is good. GOLD CUP’S HISTORY. AUCKLAND, November 29. The Gold Cup, which formed the trophy attached to this year’s Takapuna Plate, won by D. Tye with the gelding Ruffles on Saturday, has an interesting history, which was referred to by the Hon. E. W. Alison when presenting the trophy. While being brought to New Zealand from the makers in England on a cargo steamer, some members of the crew removed the Cup from the case in which it was enclosed. On the disappearance being reported, the matter was placed in the of the police and a clue was furnished by one of the crew. While in a state of intoxication, this seaman made a statement in the presence of one of the detectives engaged in unravelling the mystery, with the result that a search in one of the coal bunkers revealed the missing Cup, which had been covered by tons of coal. The Cup was subsequently exhibited at the Exhibition recently. The trophy is a reproduction of the famous Gold Cup made in 1481, and which is held by Pembroke College, Cambridge. G.N. TROTTING DERBY.
