ROSS NOTES

--■I ■ .i I, i (Our Own Correspondent.) ROSS, Nov. 29. An enjoyable ball was held in the Totara Hall on Friday in aid of the funds of the local Swimming Club. The hall was tastefully decorated, and ■ despite the inclement weather a large crowd was present, and dancing was kept up till 2.30 a.m. A bountiful supper added much to the enjoyment, and the music was supplied by Ross’s orchestra. A children’s dance was held on the following evening, and this was much enjoyed by the youngsters. ‘ Ross has distinguished itself in the <■ excellence of its concrete bath and dressing sheds, and further accommodation of this nature is contemplated. The water is supplied from the local reservoir, being that used to drive the dynamo supplying the borough with electric light. A constant inflow is bus secured at practically no cost, as the bath adjoins the power house; and thus during the season the water is kept automatically clean. The new Presbyterian home missionary, Mr S. R. Heyward, has commenced his ministry here under favourable auspices, congregations on the two Sundays being very satisfactory. A meeting of managers was held on Friday evening, when it was decided that a public welcome social should be held in Mrs Peeble’s reception room next Friday. Rev. Hayward, of Hokitika, the Moderator, promised to preside, if possible. Rev. Hayward was thanked for his welcome and much appreciated services during the period of vacancy. '

Rev. J. R. Young, the Anglican vicar, is still on the Far South journey, but -will return in time for the services on Sunday, December 5. Changes are imminent in the local Post Office, Mr John Locke, of the Hokitika office, replacing Mr R. H. Wilson, who is leaving on promotion, but whose destination is not yet announced.
