CRICKET “AMATEURS”

I DISSATISFIED WITH BONUS.

AN AUSTRALIAN GRIEVANCE.

The "Daily Express” gives prominence to a cablegram from its Melbourne correspondent; referring to the bonus proposal for the Test cricketers, and quoted the assertion of some □f the Australian cricketers who have returned “broke.” The cricketers are also quoted as comparing Hirst’s £3OOO from the benefit match with the treatment of Ernie Jones (the fast bowler), who is stated to be working □n. the Adelaide wharves to-day, and also George Giffen, who is holding a minor job in the Post Office. The “Daily Express," itt a footnote, says: “It is necessary to remember that the Australians come here as amateurs, and are accorded all the privileges Of the amateur status, whereas Hirst.Was a professional, and he depended on the game for his livelihood.” QUEENSLAND V, N.S. WALES BRISBANE, Nov. 16. For the first time in the Sheffield Shield competition, Queensland participated, and commenced a match against New South Wales in fine but dull weather, on a good wicket. New South Wales - batted first and scored 2SO (Phillips 39, Kippax 127, Scanes 38). Bowling: Mayes 4 for 52, G. Oxenham 4 for 56. Queensland lost 3 for 57 (L. Oxenham 34). Kippax batted brilliantly and gave a .polished exhibition scoring freely all round the wicket. He never appeared troubled by the bowling which had the remainder of the team in difficulties. S.A. TOUR OF N.Z. ADELAIDE, Nov. 27. At a special meeting of the Cricket Association, it was recommended that the Ground and Finance Committee authorise- a trip to N.Z., at the end of the season. A large number of players, including the Richardsons, Grimmett, Sun, Scott, Parry, Pritchard and Rundell have signified a willingness 'to participate in the tour. It is expected the team will comprise fourteen players.
