FLORIDA’S LUCKY ESCAPE.

NEW YORK, October 21. M iami reports that a state of crippled telegraph wires has prevented accurate checking of the damage in Florida storm area. One death is reported as a result of the hurricane which, however, is believed to be responsible for at least 25 fatalities and for injuries to 1800 in Cuba.

Efforts to communicate by radio with the Bahamas, towards which the gale veered yesterday evening, were unsuccessful this morning. The damage in Miami is confined to a small amount of debris in the streets. Hundreds of people gathered before the Post Office this morning and took part in the celebration of the escape.

MANY CUBAN DEAD.

HAVANA, October 21.

It is reported that three hundred were killed at Batabano, a town of 2000 inhabitants, by the hurricane. Other tewns report many dead. Some officials estimate the damage to property as high as 35,000,000 dollars.

LATER.

Reports early this morning showed that more than 650 persons were killed in Wednesday’s hurricane, and an unknown number injured. There are 6,500 homeless. More than ten towns and villages have been destroyed completely, and the damage is expected to reach nearly one hundred million dollars.
