NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special to “Star.”)

DUNEDIN, October 14.

The ten who paraded for the McLean Stakes, attracted much attention. The public made the Riccarton trained Fair Exchange a strong favourite, carrying twice as many tickets as Solgele, the i-emain-der being only poorly supported. The favourite was the first to show out from the barrier from Some Rose. Solgele and Rotor, Ark Royal getting away badly, losing several lengths. The same order was maintained round the turn, but when the field straightened up for the run home, Some Rose had Fair Exchange beaten. She and Solgele were in command. The former finished full of running and won by half a length from Ark Royal,*who showed a burst of speed over the last furlong after being last to enter the straight, and beat Fair Exchange for second honours by a head. Rotor and Starflight were together next in front of Money Peer, Bolero, Appian Way and Arrowy. The winner was responsible for a sterling performance, and gives promise of developing into a smart performer. Honours rested with Ark Royal, who had to make up a vast amount of ground galloping very fast at the finish. He is a fine looking bay colt by Kilbroney from Lady Violet, and likely to be an early winner. Solgele was prominent throughout and only succumbed to Ark Royal’s effort iu the last stride. Starflight and Rotor gave a fair exhibition, but Bolero and Money Peer were disappointing. Six starters went to the post for the Mosgiel Handicap, Full Swing being better supported than the bracketed pair Ravenna and Overdrawn. The favourite was in a good position on the rails throughout the contest, but was unable to make any impression on the Chokebore representative Rivalry, who assuming command at the mile post, was never headed. Heather Lad was the first to break the line from Full Swing and Footfall. Racing out of the straight, Rivalry went to the front and led to the back stretch from Ravenna, Full Swing and Overdrawn with Mountain Lion last. Ravenna closed on Rivalry at the far turn, but the latter was firs( riito the home run from Ravenna, Full Swing and Overdrawn, with Footfall, and Heather Lad next. Full Swing made a strong effort to overhaul the leader from the distance post, but Rivalry, hard ridden, stalled off the challenge and won by a long neck. Ravenna was four lengths away third, followed by Overdrawn, Heather Lad, Footfall, with Mountain King last.

She comes from a comparatively unknown stable, and the majority of bookmakers never wrote her name. She is not fashionably bred, and she

had done nothing that in the remotest degree suggested the possibility of her success in this classic event. The mare was purchased by Mr. Jack Davis last year for only £2<L. She was described by a newspaper turf expert as “a nice old lady, with about < s much chance of winning the Cesarewitch as the bookmakers have of losing over it.”
