GREY AUTOMOBILE ASSN.

The Annual Meeting of the Grey Automobile Association was held last evening, when there was a good attendance of members. The annual report as published yesterday, was read and adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Chairman, Mr. Geo. Harker; Vice-Chairman, Dr. W. McKay. Committee: E. McDonnell, P Hambleton, F. Kitchingham, F. Dodd, G. Schaef; Secretary, W. F. Harley. It was resolved that a letter be sent to the Railway Department and to the No. 12 Highways Board, asking if some improvement could be made to the visibility, or a signal be placed at the Spring Creek crossing, where the recent fatality occurred. It was also agreed to make similar representations in regard to Kiwi Hill near Brunner, and McGrath’s crossing, South Beach. Appreciation was expressed of the good work done by Mr. J. Higgins, County Engineer, in the improvement of the roads under his jurisdiction. The South Island Motor Union insurance scheme, for insuring members’ cars at reduced rates, was discussed. It was commended by the members of the Association. Dr. McKay moved, and Mr. E. McDonnell seconded, that the Association protest to the Minister of Public Works and the local Highways Council that nothing had been done regarding the widening of the road between Teremakau and Paroa which is considered very narrow and dangerous, and that a deputation of the Association bring the matter under the Minister’s notice when he comes to Greymouth. The motion was carried.

A meeting of the Brighter Greymouth Campaign Committee took place at the Borough Council Chambers last evening, Air Parfitt presiding over a good attendance. An apology lor absence was received from Air J. Al.

Robertson. The Greymouth Power Board wrote expressing their thanks io the 'committee for their efforts during Brighter Greymouth Week. Members of the Board agreed that the effort was a line advertisement for electricity, and w.is very helpful to the Board. The organiser (Air E. 1. Lord), of the Alain State School Jubilee, wrote asking the assistance of the committee in their 50 year celebrations. It was pointed out that at least 2000 visitors would be present, and that the jubilee committee were endeavouring to make the celebrations worthy of the object and the town. The committee were asked to take in hand the organising of shop window competitions, and to arrange during jubilee week for the illumination of business places. It was decided to give the juoilee e’.ery support. ami Alessrs Nelson, Kent, and Crooke were appointed to attend the meeting of supporters ot the movement to be held on Friday evening next. On the motion of the Major, it was decided to form teh committee into a Progress League, a meeting to be called at an early date to bring the proposal into concrete form. The balance-sheet showed the total receipts to be £l6B 7s 7d. comprised of donations £B2 14s, sports meeting and donation from Trotting Club £25 12s 4d, ball receipts £76 14s, picture matinee £1 7s 3d. Expenditure £94 8s 7d. Details : Petty cash £2 4s 6d, motor sports £7, military events £4, window dressing competition £4 4s, essays £1 Is, hidden treasure £2, Air X £3 3s, fancy costume prizes £4 4s, ball expenses £34 9s Id, ‘'Star” £8 2s 6d, Argus £lO 8s 6d, secretaiy’s salary £l3 10s, and one small account outstanding, leafing a credit balance of £90 —-which means that the hospital, the Beautifying Society, and the Alunicipul Band will each benefit to the extent of £3O, which was deemed very satisfactory. The Council met at 7.3O*last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. H. M. Coulson (Deputy-Mayor), S. F. Orr, A. R. Elcock, J. Lloyd, Jas. King, and H. T. Parry. The Grey County Council wrote re motor traffic regulations, etc., giving amount collected from traffic and making suggestions.—Cr Coulson reported that he had attended the meeting as was authorised, and stated that the Westland County Council having offered the use of the County car for the traffic inspector, he did not support the procuring of a car for the inspector : he believed that Mr Sloss would carry out Iris duties well, and fearlessly. The arrangements regarding the proportion of No. 3 district were very satisfactory. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co. wrote stating that 160 sheep and 5J> cattle were sent to Hokitika butchers during the month. D. J. Evans wrote stating that the sum of £192 had been allocated to the Hokitika Borough from the heavy motor traffic license from the Highways Board. T. Staines wrote stating that as a considerable number of dressed sheep were coming from Canterbury, he was not obtaining the quantity of food for liis pigs and asked for a refund. —It was decided that the Council were not empowered to make a refund.

A. Nancekivell wrote asking permission to instal a bowser pump at his garage in Stafford Street. Granted on the usual conditions. Permission was granted to J. N. Robinson to construct a septic tank. A. Lynch wrote asking that a drain be put in Beach Street to carry away flood water. —Resolved that th# matter be referred to the Public Works Committee to report. The Borough Treasurer reported receipts £ll3 Os sd, payments £419 17s 6d, debit £773 5s 3d; credit loan accotHit £47 16s Id. Accounts amounting to the sum of £536 0s lOd were passed for payment. The Borough Foreman reported on works carried, out during the month. A recommendation of a rebate of 5 per cent, on all rates paid within the specified time was confirmed. Cr Orr referred to the bad state of Bealey Street and suggested that the

drain be piped with 18in pipes.—lt was agreed to authorise the Public Works Committee to carry this work out. The Abattoir Manager reported animals slaughtered as follow:—12 c<Jws, 17 heifers, 82 bullocks, 840 sheep, 1 lamb, 11 pigs, 4 calves; condemned, nil. Fees £52 13s, corresponding month last year £6O 2s. Cr Coulson moved the usual motion re striking of rates* in the Borough.— Seconded oy Cr King and carried. The Public Works Committee was authorised to put 100 loads of material on the football field' on Cass Square. It was stated that no tenders were

received for felling the trees on Cass Square. WESTLAND HOSPITAL * HOKITIKA, Sept. 15. For the first time for several years the monthly meeting of the Westlnnd Hospital Board lapsed for want of quorum. Those who presented themselves were Messrs J. J. Breeze, G. Davidson, R. Meharry and M. Keenan.
