As to the world’s largest liner, a certain amount of misconception has arisen sometimes regarding the claims of the Majestic and of the Leviathan. ’The verdict of the man who designed them should be good enough to settle the question. That man is Dr. Ernest Foerster, consulting engineer of the Hamburg-American Line, and he says categorically that the Majestic has the greater-tonnage if the same method of measurement- bto' applied to both. Messrs J. Samuel White and Co., of East Cowes. Isle of Wight, have built an interesting twin-screw motor lifeboat for Nigerian Government service at Lagos. The vessel is 67ft. 6in. long on deck, 16ft. wide and 7ft. deep (moulded), and her maximum draft is 4ft. 6in. The hull is of galvanised stee] and has a turtle deck forward and aft, with a raised casing over the machinery space. Abaft the machinery space is a cockpit of the self-empty-ing type, from which the boat will be controlled, and over the fore-end of the casing is a platform for surveying and sounding. The hull is divided into 12 separate water-tight compartments, three of which will be utilised for the carriage of mails. The vessel is equipped with hand-screw steering gear, a motor capstan, stockless anchors, etc. The propelling machinery consists of two six-cylinder petrol engines, each developing 120 b.h.p. at about 500 revolutions. On the measured mile, the Cameron, as she is called, attained a speed of nearly 11 knots, and proved herself a satisfactory vessel in every respect.
