KUMARA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.)
The price of butter in Kumara has advanced Id per lb, as from yesterday. It is now being retailed at 1/10 for cash.
Dr. Baker accompanied by Murse Anderson, inspected the scholars of t the public school yesterday. Miss M. Burger, of Christchurch, paid a visit to Kumara on Friday. She reports that the health of her sister Miss L. Burger, who, recently, was an inmate of the Westland Hospital, is improving.
The Zig Zag road in the vicinity of the Bluff, the state of which has: caused a good deal of trouble, during the past couple of years, was responsible, one day this week, for a flow of language on the part of a motor driver, which for force and originality it is said would be hard to beat in any part of the world. It appears that the sole occupant of the car, who was bound for Greymouth and tied to time, was proceeding leisurely along the road, never dreaming of what was in store'- until such time as the car arrived in the vicinity of the hedge, when he espied a lorry, the wheels of which .were firmly imbedded in the centre of the road, completely blocking, all traffic, and, although various schemes were resort.ed to in an endeavour to salvage the vehicle, it was not until another powerful lorry was brought into requisition that the road was once again open to traffic. It is said that owing to the slackening of timber orders,..the erection of the Taramakau Timber Coy.’s mill at Greenstone is temporarily delayed. A contract having been let for the gravelling of the newly formed portion of the road from the beach to Kapitea, it. seems a pity when a work of such magnitude is to be carried out by a public body, that more use is not made of the advertising columns of the throe papers circulating in this district in which the work is to be carried out, instead of confining it to one, much more satisfaction-would be given to all concerned. Miss Bessie Seebeck, has been appointed teacher of the. Hohonu SChOOI.
Mrs. M. Miller, of Fielding, and a former resident of this town paid a visit to Kuniara on Friday. During her stay on the Coast Mrs. Miller will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. O. Jackson of the Christchurch road.
At the present, time there is a good deal of- sickness prevalent in Kumara, mostly of the influenza type, which is severe enough in most cases to confine those afflicted to their beds..
Whilst passing the Memorial Hall, the other day, a resident of South Westland picked up a nugget of gold, weighing something over a pennyweight. Whether the slug .was accidentally dropped by a passer-by, or was contained in the gravel carted from the pit on the Ziz Zag, is a mystery.
