When the home of Arnold Greenwood was searched by a detective in connection with a charge of theft of silk valued at £125, the property of T. Armstrong and Co., goods, which, it was alleged, had been stolen from J. Ballantyne and Co. six years ago, and valued at £2/18/1, were also found.

The accused had been employed at Ballantyne’s before joining Armstrong’s staff. He pleaded not guilty to both charges, and was committed for trial. CROSSINGS DANGER. WELLINGTON, March 4. The Main Highways Board yesterday discussed at length the question of the elimination of level railway crossings. The Board has now proposed to approach the Railway Department, with a view to arriving at a basis of contribution towards the cost of the elimination, as between the three parties concerned, the N.Z. Railway Department, Main Highways Board and local bodies. The scheme will cover a number of years. The programme lor each year being determined by the degree of danger. HAIRDRESSERS’ SHOPS. WELLINGTON, March 4. Regulations have been drafted to govern the conduct of ‘ the hairdressers’ establishments. They require scrupulous care and cleanliness for all brushes, combs, hair dusters, scissors, clippers, gowns and other implements oi articles us'ed therein. The local authority shall be satisfied of the suitability of the premises before registering the same as a hairdresser s shop, which shall be registered annually. Registration may be cancelled or refused at the discretion of the local authority, if the premises are not properly conducted. A breach oi the regulations involves liability to a penalty up to £lO fine.

HARBOURS CONFERENCE DUNEDIN, March 4. The tenth conference of the New Zealand Harbours’ Association opened this- morning, Mr. Loudon (Otago Board) presiding in the absence of the President, Mr. M. Cohen, through illness.

Mayor Tapley, in welcoming the delegates stated that many of the boards’ difficulties would be eliminated if all boards were given power to have rating areas. Where there were no such areas, Boards had to pay halt per cent, more for money. Amongst the remits were that the Marine Department be asked to revise and consolidate the harbour regulations, the harbour masters of the principal ports to co-operate with the Department ; that the Minister be urged to have modernised and consolidated the regulations referring to petroleum, explosives etc/on wharves. Mr. Burnett, Auckland, moved that section 79 of the Harbours Act be amended to provide that vessels laid up or out of commission may be free of port charges, but not berthage or dock dues. This was carried. The Conference decided to suggest that the Government approach the British Government to bring before the next Imperial Conference, the question of having adopted through the Board of Trade a uniform system of measurement of ships for payment of dues to take effect throughout the Empire.
