SUBMARINE FLEETS
A NEW INVENTION. ■Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, March 3. The “Daily News’s” naval correspondent says: A revolution in submarine tactics enabling mass attacks, launching scores of torpedoes simultaneously, necessitating sweeping changes in naval operations, is likely to result from the American Navy’s solution of the problem of underwater communication. Preliminary tests established direct telephonic communication lor two miles, and there is a possibility that the range may be greatly extended. The system is based oil the inaudible or supersonic sound waves projected through water, enabling the commodore of the submarine flagship to direct the movements of the flotilla with the same base as the Admiralty manoeuvres battleship fleet. The opinion is expressed that the invention will enable submarines to become a legitimate weapon, outliving the odium acquired owing to the attack on merchantmen.
