RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) A very enjoyable evening was held in the Miners’ Hall on Monday evening, when the Ladies’ Croquet Club held a dance, which was well attended by old and young. Dances, both jazz and old style, were indulged in to some extent, and the success was assisted greatly by two M.C.’s, Messrs Pender )and iC’iNeill.'. The muisio, which was of the best, was supplied by Miss Malligan and Mr Laffey (Waitemata) Auckland, who have been visiting this district and are the guests of Mr and Mrs James Armstrong. Extras were supplied by Mrs Manderson, Mrs O’Neill, Miss Ainsworth, and Mr Kendrick, which were much appreciated. A splendid supper was handed round. The Mayor, on behalf of the Croquet Club, thanked all present for their patronage, also the musicians foi’ their efforts, intimating that the results of the social would be beneficial to the extent of £B, also stating that a suitable croquet ground had been gratuitously given by the Postal authorities behind the Post Office, access to which could be had through the bowling green. It is expetced that the Mines Department will assist in bringing the ground to playing, pitch. Messrs Laffey and Banks supplied songs during the evening, both being in splendid voice, and Were accompanied by Miss Malligan. It is the intention of the Committee to run another dance in a fortnight’s time. Cards . were played by the non-dancers, and “after the keenest competition Messrs Bowes and Southward narrowly defeated Boote

and Gore in the final. From this game a challenge has originated from Messrs Munson and Warburton, who are willing to play" the winners at a game of 500, the best of five games, the same to be played in the Bowling Rotunda before the end of the month. The annual general meeting of members of the Seddon Memorial Library was held in the card room last Friday evening, when a large number of members were present. Mr W. S. Clark occupied the chair. The balance sheet

for the year was read and approved, a credit of £2O being shown, the greater part of which was received from euchre tournaments. It was shown that the building was in need of repair, and Mr G. Millar was requested to examine building and give an estimate of the requirements. The following Committee for the ensuing year was elected :• —Chairman, F. Wylde ; secretary-treasurer, S. Baddeley; trustees, Messrs T. Bowes and F. Wylde; committee : Messrs Houghton, Duggan, Freeman, Hunter, Harrison and Maddison. It is to be hoped members will refrain from cutting papers in the reading room, and also writing on the walls, and give the committee every assistance in running the library on a

good financial and educational system, as the Seddon. Library is one of the best assets in the district. ’ Two rinks cf bowlers from Runanga. will visit Greymouth on Monday next to assist Greymouth and Hokitika to compete against the British visitors, when it is lioped they will uphold the Coast traditions. They are as follow : Webb, Brown, Southward, Leach and Bowes, Munson, Clark, Rae. Three rinks are also making the trip to Westport to compete in the championships commencing on February 8. The school picnic, which was to have been hfeld at Hokitika on "Saturday last, was postponed owing to the inclemency of the weather, and will be held on February 20 at Hokitika, when it is hoped the weather will be kinder on this occasion. -
