COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING . REEFTON, January 27. The monthly meeting o£ the Inangahua County Council was held at the Council Chambers yesterday. Present: Messrs'J. B. Auld .(Chairman), A. M. Carroll, J. 0., Byrne, T, R. Watson, D. McVicar, J. O’Regan, L. J. Bell. The Mines Department advised that the following hrid been granted a reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre for a .period of 12 riionths from 1/1/1926: North Big River Goldmines Ltd., Progress Mines of N.Z. Ltd., New Murray Creek Goldmines Ltd. The new Keep-it-Dark Mines Ltd. applied for reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre for a period of one year from July 1, 1925.—Recommended. W. G. Poulter, secretary Maruiaschool committee, wrote asking for support in getting swing bridge oyer the' -stream of. Station Creek. —Resolved to renew application formerly made for traffic bridge on next year’s Estimates. . Henry Stuart wrote asking for permission- to build a hut on roadside on discarded gravel pit between police station and Miners’ Hal!, Waiuta. Cr. Blackadder moved that authority be asked for the grant of £2OO appearing on the Estimates for improvement of Maruia Hot Springs.— The Council decided to offer no objection, subject to the approval of the Engineer.

The Reefton Fire Brigade wrote asking for the usual grant of £24 to assist the Brigade in attending demonstration at Dunedin.—Cr. O’Regan moved that a grant of £l2 be made. Seconded by Cr. Carroll. Cr. Watson a division. Against: Bell, McVicar, Blackadder, Watson. The Chairman gave his casting vote in favour of the resolution and declared it carried. Mrs. Farrell applied for assistance in preventing encroachment on her property Grey Road. —Matter referred to the Main Highways Board. Mrs. R. Absolam wrote re repairs to a drain in Dunn Street. —The Engineer was instructed to attend to the matter. Mr. Rayner wrote re bridge near his property and the Council’s intention on this matter. —Referred to the Engineer. Burley’s Ltd? wrote asking permission to erect a kerbstone benzine pump in front of their premises.— Granted subject to the approval of Erigineer. It Was resolved that contract be called for repairs to culvert on Brown Creek Road; that the Engineer make a house-to-house inspection of taps, arid serve instructions to householders to repair leaky taps, if not done with--in three days the water to be cut off. That the lamp situated in Osbourne’s Lane be moved and placed at the Coronation Hall corner. That the Engineer be instructed to expend the balance of grant on Byrne, Bros.’ Road. That a public holiday be declared on the occasion of the school excursion

on February 10 next. A discussion took place on the advisability of the continuance of the attendance of the local member of the Main Highways Board, and it was resolved that the Board be asked to supply a copy of the addenda paper to the member, and if any local business to be .transacted the member could then attend. It was agreed that Hie authorities be written to re the erection of a new police station, asking them to push on the work; that enquiries be made re the installation of a telephone office at Waitahu, asking if any of the people there would be willing to take charge of the office. M.r Lockington waited on the Council.re the road to Douglas’s farm, stating his conditions—Mr O’Regan moved that he be asked to place his new offer in writing. The Chairman moved and Cr Byrne seconded, that the number of members representing the various ridings remain as they are. Cr McVicar moved an amendment that the boundaries of the ridings be altered. A division was takeri and the amendment was lost by 6to 2. The resolution was carried. . HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING

, The monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. B. Auld (Chairman), J. -Paine, L. J. Bell, W. Blackadder, T. Watson, G- B. Mclnroe, F. Seawright, J. O’Regan. The Hospital Boards’ Association wrote re uniform scale of X-ray fees and asking for Board’s scale of fees; also re National Hospital Day, and the observance of same. ( ’ The Secretary pointed out that a Maternity Ward would become a necessity soon. The Chairman moved that £lOOO be applied for for a maternity ward and £lOOO for an isolation ward, which was seconded by Mr. Mclnroe and carried. The Chairman proposed that the Secretary represent the Board at the Conference of Hospital Boards at Dunedin on February 24. —Seconded by Mr. Mclnroe and carried.

The annual report and balance sheet of the Hospital Association was submitted. In reply to a member the Secretary said the Inangahua Board paid £5 to the Association last year. The following reports were presented:— 1 Waiuta—Admitted 8, discharged 5, remaining in 3; number of outpatients 17. Number of attendances 69. Reefton.—Admitted 17, discharged 18, remaining in 24, death 1, operation 3, outpatients 4, attendances on outpatients 54. The Reefton Medical Superintendent suggested that the Board’s land at McDowell’s be used for providing milk for hospital, and also for poultry he stating that it should prove a profitable investment. . Mr.. Watson said the proposition was unprofitable as far as cows were concerned. It would not run six cows. Mr. O’Regan thought they should scrap the old hospital and build a new one on the Buller Road. The Chairman thought they should recognise the Superintendent’s suggestion. Mr. Watson moved that the attention of the Waiuta Medical Association be drawn to the fact of their increasing expenditure, and their contributions are not sufficient to meet the expenses.—Seconded by Mr. Bell and carried. The list of maintenance fees owing was received. Some were written off and tor others it was. decided to press tor payment.
