SHOOTING MISHAP CARTERTON, January 21.

Word was received in Carterton this morning, that a, young man named Squires, of Nelson, a member of a shooting party at White Rock, was cleaning a rifle when it exploded, the bullet entering his breast and coming out behind the shoulders. A doctor and ambulance were wired for from Martinboropgh, and the injured youth is now being brought in.

LICENSING LAW.

OHAKUNE, January 21.

Charles Smith, labourer, Raetihi, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with keeping liquor for sale in a prescribed Native area. The information was dismissed on a technical point. The accused was immediately arrested on the same charge to be heard at the next sitting. Two other charges of a similar nature are pending against Smith.

MISSING MAN FOUND

AUCKLAND, January 19.

Edgar David Hamilton McEwen, an accountant, lias been missing since January 11. He left a letter to his wife, stating that he was gradually going mad, and had decided to die. He wrote to his employers in the same strain, concluding, “When you get this I will be among the dead men.” It is thought that he is probably still, alive, but has left Auckland.

Advice has been received that McEwen is safe and well, on board the scow Kaiaia, at Tolaga Eay.

MAN DROWNED. AUCKLAND, January 20. A married- man, J. W. Schofield, was drowned in the’ harbour* while fishing from a dinghy, moored to a launch. The sea was choppy, and the dinghy capsized. A man aboard a launch jumped to the rescue, but became exhausted in the rough water, being forced to regain the launch. Schofield grasped a rope thrown from the launch but then let it go and sank. The body has not beep recovered. Deceased was a meat cariner, employed by the Auckland Meat Company.
