QUEENSLAND STRIKE

RAILWAY TRAFFIC STOPPED

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

BRISBANE, August 28.

Railway traffic is completely suspended over the whole State. The strikers are posting pickets at many stations. A mass meeting of strikers at Brisbane decided to go on witli the strike until the men's objective is achieved. 'The Government, so far, has conceded all the men’s claims except the right to hold stop work meetings in working hours, but the men demand a complete surrender by the Government. The civil' 'servants appear to be bent on aggravating the position. They propose to hold a stop-work meeting to demand a restoration of the 36 3-4 hours working week, which recently was extended to 39 hours. The general public of Brisbane felt the first effects of the strike to-day, when many thousands ordinarily using the railway to go to work were forced to find other conveyances. Many were unable to reach the icity owing to lack of transport. LATER.

Following a Cabinet meeting, a settlement of the railway strike is now believed to be imminent.
