COMPETITIONS

SIXTEENTH FESTIVAL. The Sixteenth Annual Festival, of the West Coast Competition Society, opens on Monday morning next, at 9.50 o’clock, and will-be continued until Tuesday, September 8, on which night the demonstration of prize winners will take place. The adjudicators for this Festival will be Mr and Mrs Farquhar Young of Christchurch, both of whom have adjudicated at previous competitions, with much acceptance to competitors, and the general public. Mr Young will adjudicate in the elocutionary and oratory sections, and Mrs Young in the musical sections. In the Primary Schools section, and the Essays, Mr E. Partridge, Rector of the Hokitika High School will adjudicate. The annual competition for the Club Championships will take place during the Festival. The present holders of the cups are: —Senior, United; Junior, Trinity ; Berry Oratory Cup, Mr Jas. Mclndoe. Messrs Gilbert Bros have presented a Rose Bowl for the Ladies’ Shakespearian contest. A miniature silver cup has been presented to the competitor, in the under 16 classes, who secures the highest average of marks in the elocutionary and musical (solo) sections. The Juvenile Choir contest

for the Beath baton will also be another interesting feature.' - Both the Town and Trinity Halls will be utilised for the Competitions. As the musical entry is much larger than previously, the afternoon sessions at the Town Hall will be almost wholly utilised for musical classes. In every class the .recalls will be dealt with at the evening sessions, so that none will be carried over from day to day. Right on from Monday, the afteraoon programme will include specially interesting classes. The entry for the 1925 Festival is a record, and the compiling of the programme has been exceedingly difficult, owing to the special attention necessary to assure that evening sessions will be over at a reasonable hour. The three constituent clubs, St. Columba, Trinity and United, each have full teams entered in aill the club items in the senior section, and, the two first in the junior section. Unfortunately, St. Paul’s Guild has not been able, owing .to lack of members 1 , to enter competing

teams. Each of the competing clubs has a strong team in the field, and a hard fought contest will be certain. Past competitions have been characterised by a splendid spirit of good fellowship among both adult and juvenile competitors. It is confidently expected that this desirable ' spirit will be a feature of the 1925 Festival.
