LEAGUE FOOTBALL

THE KNOCK-OUT CUPS. Notes by “Scribe.”) Mlouat will be back for the Knockout Cup, and will asisst Mlarist against Runanga at Omoto on Sunday. Both the Greens and the Magpies have powerful teams selected. ' Some altera-

tions have apparently been made in the position of the Runanga backs. Hughie Mears is under a cloud at present, and the injury to his shoulder

prevents him from playing the robust football of earlier in the season. Nobody is losing much sleep over the “strike” at Blackball, as it has been

recognised for several seasons that sooner or later the question must be

settled as to whether the League was

to be controlled by the delegates appointed by the affiliated clubs or by a

few officials of the Blackball Club. The

matter has been hanging fire for so long that the recent development will not cause any dismay. Greymouth have a good senior team for Inangahua. The latter club has re quested that the match be played early in order' to allow some of the players to reach home in connection with their work. Should the Green and Blacks win, their victory will be very popular. Brunner Juniors intend to give Marists the go of their lives in the flirt round of the Knock-ot Cup. Greens will be fielding several new players, and the Blue and Blacks will be reinforced too. Inangahua struck Nelson Creek in the draw for the junior Knock out Cup, and as the latter are very keen to- prove that the great victory over Marisis at Omoto was no fluke, Inangahua will be called on for their best effort. The departure of Grey mouth thirds for Christchurch, and the elimination

of one team last Sunday has resulted in there being no matches in this grade. Christchurch Marist fourth grade will be over shortly, and there will be keen competition for places in the rep. team. Hornby fifths were a stronger team than the Linwood team that is coming, and the matches between the latter and our fourth grade teams should be more even. There will be two Christchurch teams playing at the Rec. tomorrow week, as Addington juniors are coming over with a good team. 'Petone seniors will be here on September 19 and 20. Brunner and Runanga fourth grades will play their fixture at Dunollie on Sunday. Tremendous interest is being taken in the visit of the Quensland team,

and, now that the match at Dunedin lias been cancelled, it is probable that New Zealand - will play the Bananalanders at Christchurch on September 26. Auckland reps, will’be here on Wednesday week, and Moaut will probably lead the Coast team against them. The Coast juniors showed surprisingly good form at Chistchurch, and the backs combined well. Spectators consider tht if the ground had been in good order, the score would have L "■ huger. The defeat of the seniors has yet to be fully explained. This much is certain —the margin between the Coast and Canterbury is not so large as the , score would indicate. Canterbury is the possesosr of a glorious back team, however. In conversation with one of

the members of the party accompanying the Coast teams, Dan McCormack expressed the opinion that Marists had FOiV a 25 per cent better senior team than before they joined tho League game. He described as “moonshine” the reports that the team was weaker. Some people, he said, concluded that the Club had slipped because some of the old names were missing, but it was not Marists’ policy to depend on veterans. Robins was a thorn in the side of the West Coast backs at Monica Park. The following will represent Inangahua v. Grey : —Seniors : McAlpine, Flynn, Curtis, King, McElwee, Mclennan, Clegg. McElwee, Lynsky, Robinsen, Neilson, McVicar, Byrne. Juniors v. Nelson Creek : Lee, Banna.ii, Thorn, Campbell, Bourke, Topp, Gilroy. Belsworthy, Cook. Byrne, Purton, Malloy, Scott. QUEENSLAND TEAM. SYDNEY. Aug. 27. The Queensland Rugby League team wore passengers for Auckland by the Aorangi to-dav. >
