Mr. Fred Foley arrived by Tuesday’s express and gave an entertainment in the Social Hall in the even- ’ ing. He received an enthusiastic re- *- ception. ’ Mr. Zierman, of the Public Works ’ Department, Wellington, . arrived by ' Thursday’s express. Mr. Zierman is L an old resident of Otira, who was transferred to Wellington after the completion of the power house and . electrification of the tunnel. The weather has changed during the week and a wet spell appears to have set in. A heavy fall of snow is expected. ! On Friday evening a great crowd attended the fancy dress ball held under the auspices of the school committee for the purpose of raising funds for the improvement of the school grounds and for the purchase of school equipment, which is necessary in order that modern educational methods may be carried out. Thanks to the zeal and enthusiasm of a hardworking committee, the ready response of residents to appeals for prizes, supper etc., and the wholehearted manner in which everybody entered into the spirit of the evening,

the ball was a great success. Good prizes were given for various competitions,. both for children and-adults. Shortly after supper Mr. Allott, chairman of the -school committee, thanked all those who had helped in any way to make the evening a success. He proceeded with the presentation of the following prizes: First prize, fancy dress costume, ladies, Miss Henderson; gent’s Mr. L. Williams; Children’s fancy dress, girls, Joyce Allott; boys, Russell Young; waltzing competition, Mrs. Young and Mr. Carroll; lucky spot waltz, Mrs. Frazer and Mr. Black; children’s

skipping competition, girls—Maisie Williams Ist,, Iris Abrahams 2nd; boys, Cecil Bryan 1, Terry Smith 2; children’s recitation competition (piece of child’s own selection), girls, Ruth King; boys, Alf Hopkins. Special prizes were won by Mrs. Pollock and Mr. H. Spencer. -During the evening the tiny tots gave an item “How would you like to be a baby?” which was received with prolonged applause. The dancers were kept moving to music supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Abrahams and Mr. Amalric while Miss Calieri and Messrs Brown and Spencer contributed extras. The duties of M’s.C. were ably carried out by Messrs Black and Young. Dancing till 2 o’clock in the morning brought to a close a very successful function. 1.1. —
