HOKITIKA BOROUGH vuuwuiu (Our Own Correspondent:) The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present, the Mayor (Mr. G. A* Perry)* Crs. H. M. Coulson, Jas. King. A. 11. Hlcock, D. J. Evans, S. F. Orr, G. Heinz, W. Jeffries, and H. A. Blank. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. Pan;y-. The Minister of Mines wrote stating that he had decided to remit' certain rates on’property as recommended. •' ' The Minister of -Internal .Affairs wrote re Gazette handing over South Hokitika to Westland County Council. —Cr. Jeffries asked that a list of ratepayers of Hokitika and amount of rates collected in South Hokitika be obtained for next meeting.', . The. Hon. H. L. Michel wrote stating he would have pleasure in acting ■ids delegate with Buller Progress League... . 4 The, District Lands Registrar wrote asking advice re right of way known as Johnston and Cd.—Reply to state that this right of way was given to the Council who had kept it in repair. ' • The Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote stating certain fire plugs required attention. —To be attended. A request from C. Gibbons, for his annual holiday was granted. The Borough Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £692/0/2, payments £ll6/2/3, debit £52/13/2. Loan account credit, £973/14/5.. Accounts to the amount of £l7l/12/ were passed for payment. , Tenders for clearing gorse off Stafford Street were received from T. Marks £25; Jas Milner £B. The. tender of Jas. Milner was accepted.. A tender was received Tor cleaning out Sewell Street,‘but it was considered too. high and was not accepted. The Library Committee reported that repairs were progressing favourably . and. that the library would be closed ..for, a. few evenings till repairs were, completed. '. Cr. Coulson, by notice, moved, that the tar . sealing of Revell Street be proceeded with at once. He said that the matter had been shelved too 'often, as it was said the time was not. opportune. The loan money was being used up. The Mayor of Greymouth, had informed him that tar. sealing is carried on all the year round in Greymouth, and he invited the. overseer or Councillors when in Greymouth to inspect the plant and make any enquiries necessary; Cr. Orr seconded the motion and said that a proper plant for tarsealing and asphalting should be procured. Cr. Heinz said it was useless to pass the resolution without first getting the plant. Similar resolutions had been passed before. t Cr. Jeffries supported the resolution stating that Revell Street was a disgrace. The motion was carried and the Chairman of P.W. Committee with the ■overseer was authorised to make enquiries about a plant. 5 kumara borough council. (Out Own Correspondent.) The Kumara Borough Council met on Wednesday, Present/‘'The Mayor, Crs Benyon, Burrell, McNabb, McDonald, Martyn, Saraty, Evenden, McFarlane. The Kumara lire Brigade wrote asking for payment of the usual subsidy, also for amount due for insurance of members.—To be paid. . The Town Clerk,' Greymouth, wrote reporting on the meeting of representatives of local bodies held to consider the matter of levying fees under the regulations governing the use of motor lorries. The Mayor said that he had attended the meeting. He had been led to believe that a representative of the Government would be there to explain the position, but no ■such person was in evidence. Several resolutions had been passed, but it was a question whether they could be carried out.

The Mines Department wrote asking that certain outstanding rents, for the reasons given by the Receiver of Gold Revenues, be written off as irrecoverable. Resolved to recommend that the Department treat the amounts as irrecoverable.

The acting-secretary of the Kumara Football Club: wrote asking that the Recreation Ground be not. let. Resolved that for the present the request be granted. M. Murphy wrote applying lor slaughtering license. Resolved that the application be recommended. Ci' Benyon moved that the Pawn Clerk- .communicate with the Highways Board re the speed at wlueh motor cars travel through the Borough. Cr McFarlane seconded, and the motion was carried. Cr Benyon moved that Mr John McFarlane be appointed examiner of persons wishing to take out motor ■drivers' licenses. Cr Burrell seconded.—Carried.

Cr Burrell moved that the Town Clerk communicate with the chief Postmaster, asking that the Morse be re-instated in the Kumara Office- Cr Saraty seconded. —Carried. Cr Benyon moved that the Chairman of Public Works be empowered lo employ an extra man to assist the day labour man to repair Wylde’s Creek bridge, and that the work be put in hand at once. Cr McFarlane seconded. —Carried. It was resolved on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr McFarlane, that the Town Clerk communicate with the Clerk of the Murchison County re information in connec.tion with electric, light plant. It was resolved that the Borough Inspector be given notice to prosecute all persons riding bicycles on the footpaths, and riding at night without lights.

The Mayor said that time was slipping by, and it was necessary that something should be done in the way of setting up-a committee to go into the matter of celebrating the jubilee of the opening of the Kumara Goldfield. lie moved that a public meeting be called for Wednesday, July L Cr Benyon seconded. — Carried.
