NOTES ON THE RACING.

(Special to “Star”).

ASHBURTON, June 25. Jubilant was paying Jess than even money in the Ashburton. Handicap. The Cheat made most use of his weight, which, with a 51b. allowance, brought his impost to 9.1, a pound above the minimum'; He was always slightly in advance of Kilbimie, who ran a solid race, but was perhaps a little fortunate that Jubilant was not too well placed on the rails and behind her field at the turn for home. The Gay Lad filly finished strongly, but apparently 'requires a longer journey than a mile. Los Ambus had every chance, but does not stay, and Ferino was also beaten early in the race. The Longbeach Handicap had speculatx>rs puzzled, and ■when the machine closed Kaikahu was carrying onlv £1 10s more than His Majesty, with Kukume carrying another 10s less. The last-named, after being tailed on for half the journey; went up to her field and' had the result in her keeping at the turn for home. The Auck-land-bred Kaikahu gave his supporters a very good run, but found the topweight a trifle' too good on the day. He was also, hard put to it in the iast half furlong to stave off Ophir, who stay ed on well. His Majesty was well beaten at the end of a mile- Winkie’s Rebel and Captain Sarto, after being prominent at different stagey, found the company a little too pood, as did Adopted, -who -was out of the running in the first half-mile. Lava completed a very good double for J. McCombe by winning the Thorndon Handicap. The Solferino filly, ana Dancing Days were the only two in it after one hundred yards had been covered and the former won comfortably in good time. Solferite nearly, fell at ilie barrier rise, and was tailed' off from the first furlong. Flaming Ray ran a good race and will win in less pretentious companv. Gold Town was also prominent throughout, as was Clontarf. The last-named, with 10.8 up, did not begin quite so .well as he usually does ; but was running on better than anything except the winner.
