OBITUARY

mr Jonah vergurson.

One of Grey mouth’s oldest and bestknown residents, Mr Jonah (“Joe ) Vergursoh, died. this morning at his residence', Threadneedle Street, after an illness lasting about three weeks. A native of Norfolk, England, deceased was 73 years of age, and had resided in Greymouth for over 50 years. He was one of the oldest Druids in New Zealand, and obtained the signatures for the charter of the Lodge opened St Greymouth on January 13, 1881. He had occupied the highest position in the Lodge and was senior trustee. 1 The late Mr Vergurson was employed for many vears by the old Greymouth Gas Company, obtaining his knowledge of that 1 work from the Burton Gas Cottipany, England. Htf was also employed by the late Edmund Wickes and T. W. Wilson, timber merchants. He was best known to the public, as doorkeeper at the .Opera House, a position he occupied for many years unddr the late Tom Pollard, ,and continued to hold Under the present man. agementJ Deceased was also a familiar figure at Victoria Park, where he was employed as gatekeeper by the GreymoUjth Trotting Club. A keen horticulturist, the late Mr Vergurson was regarded as an authority upon the subject. He leaves a widow, two daughters (Mrs J. drams, of Blenheim, . and Mrs Trane, of Blenheim), and ; one son (Mr William Vergurson, horticulturist, Nelson). The funeral, at which the Druidic service will be read, will take place on Sunday, at 2 p.m.
