BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. . <r>(Our Own Correspondent.) S , HOKITIKA, June 13. The Borough Council met last evening. Present : The Mayor (Mr G. A. l orry), Crs H. M. Coulson, J. A. King, A. It. From Sir F. D. Bell re the memorial at Point Harwell and at Parliament Buildings of the late Prime Minister, and asking lor Hie co-operation of the Borough. On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to fall in with the suggestion, the Council to be the Committee and the Town Clerk the Treasurer. The Westland County Council wrote giving statement of payments to be made by the Borough to tlie County, for taking over the portion of the Borough known as South Hokitika ; viz £lO3 this year, £lOO in 1926, ami £l5O in £1927. On the motion of Cr Coulson it was decided to accept the proposal. A Nancekivell wrote re the drainage on his section, and asking for a drain in front of his residence. Stafford- Street foi; use of timber lorry, owing bad. state of, Livingstone Street. Cr Blank suggested 'that the request. be. effect to. Livingstone Street was almost impassable. He considered it would be cheaper to let the lorry use Stalford Street than keep on rejiairing Gibson Quay and Livingstone Street. They should give Stafford Street two months’ trial. Cr Coulson thought that one-month’s trial should be suificient. Cr Orr thought it better to let the heavy traffic come down Stafford Street which, had . a good foundation, and was wider. It is

always more economical to use one road with a good foundation than anarrow one. Resolved that a mouth’s trial be given to lorries using Stafford Street. The Buller Progress League wrote thanking the Council for its support’ in urging the corqpletion of the Westport-Greymouth Road, anc , as , ing for the appointment of a delegate to°join a deputation to the Minister in Wellington.. Received. The Hon. H. L. Michel to be asked to represent the Council. The Westland County Council wrote stating that ,£35 has been voted towards maintenance of Hokitika Cemetery. Cr Coulson said tins ■ would help considerably, but would not see the Council out of the wood. There were 64 per cent, of burials from the

County. He recommended that the Reserves Committee look into the matter seriously. He thought a higher rate should be charged to County burials. Cr Jeffries said he did. not quite understand Cr Coulson,• who apparently would make it dearer to die in the County. However, he considered the position in the cemetery was not altogether satisfactory.

Cr Evans said .that the extraordniary. expense had. occurred at the ceineterv, which would,, not be recinring. Tint a. lot' of cleaning up was necessary. . The Westland County Council also wrote stating that a gravel reserve was required in the Borough Reserve at Koiterangi on Mr< Jones lease. Resolved that necessary arrangements be made. The Board of Health wrote giving analysis of water taken from Kaiimri Forks, stating it was very good for domestic and other purposesF. J.-Bade wrote asking ror improvement to road to his residence on the Terrace. Received. Left with P. W.' Committee to improve the access. II TI. ‘Williams wrote complaining of the growth of blackberry and gorse in adjoining section. —Received. The Rugby Sub-Union wrote taking exception to the fact, that the Council had decided to collect 10 per cent cate takings on the afternoons of matches, and pointing out the Union had made several payments to the Council which were thought to be considered equivalent to 10 per cent. The Reserves Committee to interview the Union. Cr Coulson, on behalf

of the Union, stated their case to the Council. . The Borough Treasurer reported receipts to the amount of £123 17r. 6d, payments £319 U s ’ uebit £528 11s 6d; credit loan account £973 14s sd. ’ . Accounts amounting to £4UB as were passed for payment. The chairman of the 1 .Y . Committee (Cr Blank) made recommendations on behalf of the Committee including the completion of lancred Street drain to north Weld Street. He was very dubious concerning the success of that drain, which he considered was to low and would silt-up by the river water. The overseer, Mr D. Cr Jeffries asked if any report had been presented re lighting of the town. Cr Jeffries also referred to the bad state of footpaths in Revell •Street. He suggested that the I'.'y. Committee inspect the paths. It was resolved that the footpaths be put m order in Revell Street. Cr Coulson gave notice to move: That tar sealing of Revell Street from Stafford Street to Weld Street be proceeded with.
